Nest monitoring continues
A few nests already have chicks. These two have their eyes open so they are at least one day old. When chicks are this small they can't thermoregulate themselves. The adults brood the chicks to keep them from getting too hot or cold. The temperature in the penguin colony can change rapidly. A monitor in the penguin colony recorded a low of 10 degrees Celsius at 7:00 this morning yet by 9:49 it had heated up to 32 degrees!
